Review: Pretty in Scarlet

I am very lucky to be surrounded by so many wonderfully talented people. Two of them took and gone and went and teamed up and created a group they call Murder Ballads. A bit macabre, but thankfully that genre is not the be-all and end-all of their musical catalogue.

Their first album, “Pretty in Scarlet,” was funded by an Indiegogo campaign, and ( Read more... )

Eeee! Thank you so much for such a glowing review! I'm sorry it took so long to find it (I was away in Portland all week), but I'm so pleased that you liked it. To answer questions:

* The CD was recorded in Catt's office rather than a dedicated studio, so what you hear is pretty much the sound of the room. There's only so much reverb you can add to a track recorded front-and-center like that before it sounds too echo-y and weird (a problem I ran into with some of my solo stuff that I recorded in my bedroom). Joel did a fantastic job getting the best sound out of us as possible, and we approved the mixes before mastering, as well as the masters themselves.

* It's easy to sound confident when you're standing shoulder-to-shoulder with an ass-kicker/name-taker like Catt. :)

* We do have new material, but no immediate plans to formally record just yet. However, we do have a few Super Secret Plans afoot which I think will be of interest. Watch this space!

Ahh, that makes sense about the sound. I know that budgetary constraints were (and probably still are) a factor for the recording process....but maaaan, it's like a genuine and original Van Gogh placed in a plastic frame from the dollar store. Your "voices" (in both the literal and figurative senses) would really shine, given the right recording milieu.

P.S. - don't sell yourself so short. You are quite the ass-kicker in your own right, and if you don't take names it's because you're so damn humble. ♥ You have a gift, and you should embrace it fully. Immerse yourself in what you're capable of - you've got it and you should flaunt it.
