Well, now that Wilson knew about Cuddy and he, Wilson was the first person House thought to go to regarding their relationship or whatever the hell it was. To vent, or to voice issues, or... just vent. Particularly with the 'in love' business. House still didn't know what to make of that. And not just because Cuddy was in love with him, but because ( Read more... )

"... and so there I was," the Doctor was saying, his food forgotten as he gesticulated with both hands. "Bound hand and foot, trussed up on a pole like a skewered boar, and directly beneath me was one of the Rani's tricky little matter-conversion land mines. Of course, if I stepped on it, I wouldn't explode, no, nothing that simple. My DNA would convert from animal to vegetable matter and I'd turn, quite literally, into a tree!"

He sipped at his tea, pausing for dramatic effect. "So, my problem was twofold. I had to free myself and stop the Master and the Rani from perpetuating their human experiments, and not turn myself into a stately beech in the process. So I-" He cut himself off at the newcomer's sudden approach. Tall, gruff, unshaven, walking cane: the fabled and infamous Dr. House.

At House's command, the Doctor remained silent. After all, he wasn't the one being addressed, and he was rather curious to see how Wilson handled his rather brusque friend.

Wilson nodded in some places and raised his eyebrows in others, his fork laying on his plate and his lunch barely touched. At the explaination of the matter-conversion land mine, he leaned foward again, his mouth curving into a wide grin.

When the Doctor stopped, Wilson shut his mouth and frowned, following his line of sight and then hearing--

Oh.

"Or, you know, you could wait and we could speak in ten minutes," Wilson offered, gesturing with one hand. He looked back to the Doctor and offered him a knowing look, one that said 'Yes, this is the one'. Wilson sipped his water and looked back up at House. "That could work out just as well. And since you're not bleeding from the ear," Wilson shifted in his seat to study either side of House's face, "Or on fire, I'm thinking it can wait those ten minutes. Unless Cuddy is on fire?" Wilson raised an eyebrow and gave House the knowing look this time.

House didn't even notice the other guy sitting at the table. He frowned down at Wilson when Wilson didn't jump to his immediate aid, then gave Wilson a look equal parts wry and impatient. The look intensified when Wilson mentioned Cuddy.

"She's smokin' hot," House agreed sarcastically. "Not that that's any of your concern. And this can't wait ten minutes, just in case smokin' hot Cuddy wants to get hot and steamy on my ass."

He reached down towards Wilson's plate and snatched up a piece of food, adding, "Come on, it's not like you're eating anything. Waste of good food, if you ask me." He popped the food into his mouth and just as he began to chew, his eyes darted up towards the other guy sitting at the table. House quirked his brows at him, only realising just now there was someone else there.

He looked back to Wilson questioningly, then looked to the guy again. "Who are you?" he asked rudely.

The Doctor smiled at the crude remark, and at the casual way House stole food from Wilson's plate, amused despite himself. The man's tone with Wilson, and lack of regard for his time and food, suggested a long-term camaraderie as well as a long-term campaign of antagonism. It was a paradox in action, and the Doctor found it fascinating.

When House's attention reverted to him, the Doctor smiled warmly. Pushing himself to his feet, he extended his left hand for House to shake without rearranging his cane. "I'm the Doctor. It's very nice to finally make your acquaintance, House."

Butter wouldn't melt in the Doctor's mouth. Well, it would, but very slowly.
