my (delayed) opinion

May 26, 2007 00:53

Just been too busy with iconography this week to clearly write out my opinion on the "reunification" between ROCOR & MP. I put that in quotes because it's just a unification, we're not "going back" to anything, and the MP was never our "Mother Church". I'll be away in Jordanville this weekend, so anyone who's (still) curious about my take on things ( Read more... )

"Today's Moscow Patriarchate is the as-yet-unrepentant inheritor of this legacy."

since when? Was the glorification of the New Martyrs just a show? There may be a few at the top who feel this way, but the ROCOR certainly shouldn't fool itself thinking that it's hierarchs were always holy and pious. The actions and events of Met. Sergius were a direct result of the subjection of the Church by the Russian emporers of the last 2 centuries of the 'Holy' Russian Monarchy. One simply can't blame the communists for these actions, or the revolution should have never happened.

"Many in the Church Abroad wonder how this merger went through at all."

more like a very very small, yet extremely vocal minority

"The process was secretive, and there has even been speculation that some American businessmen with Russian ties helped to push it along."

so the publishing of the accounts of all the meetings wasn't enough? should they perhaps have broadcast them on TV? I wonder if Ms. Kizenko's brother was pushing this along.

A look at history like this strikes me as somewhat relativistic, and consequently leads to a blind optimism at the future.

As time goes on, the more people I talk to, the more people I have found in ROCOR who aren't happy with the way things have turned out (but are ultimately staying, by the way).

There was, in fact, very little transparency in the way the accounts of the meetings were broadcast and typically amounted to vague generalities.

Thanks for posting this: I had heard of it, but had trouble finding it for myself. Thank God we live in a free country where we can have healthy debate like this... unlike other countires, where there all of the media is state controlled. :)

Yes, I can't stand countries where the media and press is state censored and controlled, like Tsarist Russia and the Byzantine Empire. ;)

The censorship that went on even in Nicholas II's Russia doesn't compare with Putin's Russia, let alone during openly Communist times.
