I don't think things really are as terrible as you see them right now. I mean, most likely you are seeing the dark side of everything and forgetting about the good side. It happens to me all too often.
It sounds like a good idea to look around, although I feel uneasy about this "shopping for a bride" thing. I'm more of the opinion that it's good to meet and get friends with people of both genders from a variety of milieux (Orthodox, of course), and see what happens next.
