YES to NATO Expansion ext_93170 April 1 2008, 15:58:13 UTC
If NATO grants MAP to Georgia and Ukraine in Bucharest April 2-4, this move will be the ONLY guarantee for peace and democracy in Caucasus region, as well as in Eastern Europe. There is nothing the Russin Federation can do about it. Expansion is the ONLY logical action for NATO, because of terrorism and its threats.

There really are pros and cons to this (like anything else).
I agree that it will go through. It'll happen.
But I certainly understand their fears that as a less powerful country, joining with NATO will put them in a position to be obligated to join in disputes that they are better off staying out of. That their needs, as a country, will be lost for 'the bigger picture'.
And I believe they rightly fear retribution against their country from Russia for this. Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, has threatened to target nuclear missiles on Ukraine if it joined NATO.

I can't believe Bush has Ukraine's best interests in this at all and half of Ukraine recognizes that.
Joining with NATO directly affects the people but the people's protests are being ignored. NATO says it's purpose is to stand for democracy but they're forcing themselves into Ukraine despite the people's wants.
