It cracks me up when you tell people that when bacteria first started filling the atmosphere with oxygen it was a massive crisis for all living things because oxygen is a highly reactive, toxic, corrosive, dangerous gas that reacts with almost everything it comes in contact with... and they try to tell you that you're making that up and that oxygen ( Read more... )

Must say, that is one hell of a lovely post, that!
Thoroughly enjoyed every word.
See I know all this stuff in German, to read it in English is highly educational. Thank you so much for this.

As I'm a non-scientist with a scientist husband and daughter it sounds fine to me. (He's a chemist and she's a biologist and mostly I let it all just flow past me.) You explain things very well(better than they do). Your essays and your doctoral thesis will be awesome ( I have beta read a couple of doctoral theses so I know what I'm talking about here.)

My essays are, I'm sure, very boring, because professors do not like my excessive use of commas or my enthusiasm for metaphors, so I have to be careful to keep it all tidy and boring.

I have already saved your article. You don´t know how much you helped me to understand this amazing process. And I can understand your lovely English and the style is very clear and even amusing.

I'm always impressed to run across someone else who knows what an anaerobic organism is, etc. etc.

You're right. Not everyone thinks it's interesting. :)

I can't THINK why everyone doesn't find it totally absorbing. After all, it is what we are... we are made of!!! It is utterly fantastic that we are all stuck together and function like we do... just bacteria and genes and...things YOU CAN'T SEE!!

The animal is... as Darwin says "Endless forms most beautiful".

Ruby is just wonderful the way she explains it all. Brilliant.

They seem like things people should know, but I suppose it's just not useful or interesting to most people. Sigh...
