Fascinating, as ever.

And I'd be happy to cast an eye over anything you write.

Thank you! Even though "anything I write" is a bit generous since I do write garbage that not even people here see...

You say Black Cherry only!? Do they grow to be for eating? Not the galls, the cherries? Nothing nicer than a bowlfull of them. I knew the galls thing but not about the parasite and what she does and ... oh dear, their life is not exactly whoopee is it? I think I'll stick with being 'yooman'.

Where is the RUBYVERSE story!!!! Yer writing on there again... you KNOW I've kept all the raspberry jam ones..hahahah. Hobbits and jam.
DO kick me if I miss any of your posts love... XXX

You can eat black cherries... they are very tart and not at all sweet, but people often use them in pies or other baked goods where they add a nice bit of flavor to counter the sweetness. I never see cherries on any of the trees because birds get to them long before I do. Black cherry is a valuable timber tree here because the wood is a beautiful deep red color, but they are also a pest because they like to grow along the edges of fields and pastures, and damaged or wilted leaves (NOT healthy ones!) produce toxic chemicals that make livestock ill when they eat them.

And neither of the stories are going anywhere until I get some folks to give me some idea what they think of where I'm going with them.

It's the best thing in the world to find out what something is so you can call it by its name and know what it is and how it works. It's like meeting a new friend you'll recognize every time you see them again.

I guess that's just the relationship I have with the natural world... like with people. Some things are distant but I respect them for being what they are; some I'll never meet but I can read about; some are new acquaintances that I am excited to learn more about... and some are like old friends that I have to stop and say hello to and spend a minute catching up with every time I see them, whether it's just been since last fall or our meetings are rare. The only difference is that while each person has his/her own name and own face, plants and animals tend to share them (with a few exceptions, like particular trees I have become very fond of, in various states of life and decay), so I may meet the same friend everywhere I look on a walk, or have to search in hidden places to find them... but after knowing them for a while you have some idea what they like and where they like to be...
