Some nature pics and a Bubba Fatass

Finals week for school... not terribly worried. I don't usually get worked up over tests. I probably should get MORE worked up over tests, considering I haven't done as well on some of the quizzes as I would have liked... oh, well ( Read more... )

Amazing fungi!

I've always loved irises. We have tiny wild blue ones here too, though much earlier in the year, obviously.

I expect the failed takes of the "casual" hammer catch will turn up among the DVD bonuses. And on Youtube.

It's just now gotten consistently warm enough for our irises... they're not frost-tolerant.

I hope there are numerous failed takes and maybe it lands on someone's toe once or twice.

Bubba clearly doesn't stress about tests... You shouldn't, either - it's perfectly OK not to! I never did, and I passed everything except my first driving test. The one time I stressed, over a school inspection, the entire school failed...

We have flags/irises like that under our orange trees.

I would never dare identify a fungus in case it meant somebody might eat it. I believe in France you can take a sample to the nearest pharmacy where they will tell you exactly what it is and whether it is safe to eat. The rest of us have to rely on the experts...

And oh! Your daisies!! We have those in Portugal and I've been calling them the not-daisies (offski has this system of naming Iberian peninsula flowers, too). As one of my Portuguese friends said, if it looks like a daisy, etc. etc. But the leaves are all wrong. Brit daisies have a different way of growing their leaves!! I must find some and take a photograph.

I don't eat any wild fungi because I don't have anyone to help me make sure they are safe, and the only one I know for sure would be morels. I would hope any tentative identifications I made would be taken with a grain of salt... well, not literally.

Those are our standard daisies around here, but the aster family is so weird and so huge that it would surprise me more if there WEREN'T different ones.

Another super lesson in Nature walkings. What lovely creeks and those iris.. I keep 'Iris' for the blue ones and 'Flags' for the yellow ( ... )

I will have to read more about this Tradescant fellow... I didn't realize it was the name of a person. I will enjoy looking him up.

As for the flower fungus... I have been trying all morning to get a name for it and I still have NO IDEA. Asian countries have something somewhat like it that they call "snow fungus" and make soup out of, but I looked closely and it is NOT the same thing. Also, those are rather small and this one was the size of a dinner plate.

The box is not broken, it is just differently aligned now that Bubba has rearranged it.

You said 'wood' a lot in this entry. I approve.

You found the green larva very easily, but you missed the black pavement larva next to it.

What's wrong with Spiderwort? That's my middle name. It's a very noble name, it means 'Plant that is a bit spidery'.

Every single time I type the word "wood", I think of you.

Black pavement larvae are very sneaky. Good on you for spotting it!

It's not the "spider" part of the name I take issue with. It's more the "wort" part.

Ah, the Bubba CAT being CAT!!
Loved the walk, thought the first was a flower.
We had those 'flags' when I was a kid up north, but down here, a stretch of the ditch beside the Hillybilly (local convenience store) has yellow ones.
and that spiderwort - I had one grow beside the walk, had no clue what it was except pretty - with a horrible name like that, maybe i'll remember it!

We have yellow flags too, but the ones around the lake are usually blue. As for the spiderwort, you can always just pick something else to call it. :)
