My boyfriend put his fic on Riddikulus and has been getting good reviews. But one of them politely said it'd have been better if he had a beta reader. I beta read that fic, and I beta quite a lot and it's awful to think I'm not any good at it. This isn't a please-tell-me-I'm-cool-and-that-person-sucks post - I'm worrying more about the people I ( Read more... )

Darling, you've been my beta for ages and I wouldn't change you for the world. You are a good beta, don't think I'm just saying that because I'm really not, but you really are and I quite often wonder how I was so lucky to find you when I did. *clings*

Well, I think when one is a beginner at writing fanfic or a new fandom in general, it doesn't hurt to get a fic betaed by multiple people. I certainly like the different opinions or rather, the multiple opinions (as different betas notice different things and comment on different things). Because no beta can be as throughout as possible.

But that's just my opinion. Perhaps you weren't very throughout with your beta as it was for your boyfriend. It could have some effect. You've only betaed my work once and that was for a fandom you didn't know much about, so I don't consider myself to know how good you're at betaing, but you did a good job with that fic you betaed for me.

That is true. I always like to have a few betas for my stories, but as it was my boyfriend's first fic and it wasnt very complicated, I didn't want to slow his excitement down by taking time sending it to other betas before we posted it. But yeah, that's probably why it wasn't so good. Thanks! I didn't think of that!

This'll probably sound snotty, but sometimes good stories just go right over people's heads. I got the 'get a beta' comment before for a story that had been beta'd by two extremely good betas - and I think it was because I'd written in present tense, and that blew the reviewer's mind.

(Yeah. That did sound snotty, dangit.)

But anyway, I bet you're wonderful! Don't let it bug you.

Heheh, it's true though. Reviews like that really bug me, I've had reviews where people just say "I don't get why you wrote it in present tense" :/

Thankyou! :)
