Oh, no! Alex Parrot has died!!!!!!

That awesome African Grey parrot Alex, the one who made up the word "bananaberry" for apples because he didn't know what they were called (which indicates a high level of understanding of language and creativity, as well as a desire to communicate verbally even when inconvienient) died last week. I have never heard of this bird, but he sounds amazing. There was a time when I was desperately wanting an African Grey, but eventually I understood that I could never do it justice. They shouldn't be held in captivity anyway, and least of all in single captivity....

It's intriguing to imagine that maybe birds do understand us better than we think. Parakeets are not known for this sort of "intelligence", but sometimes I do have the feeling that my parakeets do have a certain understanding of what I say or do. They will complain quite distinctively if I'm too late with their food, making sounds they never make in other contexts... Of course I might be seeing things 'cause I'm a proud bird mommy, but I like to think I'm not. *grins*

at first I didn't see the word parrot in your title, and suddenly became very worried that you knew something very important that I had somehow missed. then I skipped the the last line of your entry, and that didn't help things.

saw a guy today outside Sy's wearing a viking hat and offering to read peoples runes for $5 a pop. maybe you should consider a career change.

but he had the hat! that means it must be authentic. I think there may have even been horns on it.
