Comparisons of women and men per capita in a wide range of categories. The most depressing are in diagnosis of learning disabilities, incarceration, and suicide.

I want a drink.

A big part of the suicide rates is in the methods typically chosen by each gender. Women actually attempt suicide more often, they just do things like OD on pills, which doesn't work a lot of the time (and then they get their stomach pumped, survive, and go on to try the same thing 6 months down the line). Men on the other hand tend to do things like jump off a building or shoot themselves, which inherently carries a higher mortality rate.

I really don't think my opinions about this subject in particular would be based on any empirical evidence.

IMHO the reason for this change is the lack of challenge for the male and a change in the role of the hunter in the changing society that we have. Since equal opportunity women have a new place in society that was at one point only occupied by men. So a definite role of males in society is now undefined. But we also at this time lack strong males as good examples to our youth. And you can blame the music or whatever, but mostly I think that it's devolving into pleasure seeking and not so much specific cultural influence.

Then again you could assign some blame to the emphasis we place on physical heroes. As a society we don't celebrate the intellectuals nearly to the degree that we do the athletes. While being able to run up a mountain is impressive and deserving of praise, solving long standing economic issues through mathematics should be celebrated if not as much more so.

Rant Off

Later, thanks for the brain candy.
