I highly, highly recommend anything by Robin McKinley, and then also Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore. They still feature het-couples, but the relationships are much more ... real than anything in a LaNora book. God love her, but she writes a formula, every time.
I also recommend Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. I think I told you about that one when we were at the Co-op - it features male/male relations and some seriously twisted morals, and swordfighting. :)
I second the Robin McKinley recommendation and also recommend the novel Palimpsest which is...kind of a dark-erotic-fairytale-thing, I guess. But there is a lot of romance, everybody is at least slightly queer and no one gets married at the end.
