Just something

'Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. Is that from Sandman? ... Yes. I remember, now.

And I remember reading that the first time thinking, "Gee that's an awfully cynical way of looking at it", but I'd never been anywhere close to love at that point. Now, I am a little more inclined to agree.

It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. ... That bit, especially, is real.

I'm a fan of the kind of love that lets me - and those whom I love - know that they are not alone. But I'm not really a fan, so much, of that other kind, which most of us construe as Romance.

There are better ways to go about being alive.

I am sort of where Carrie was reading this the first time, I think. It's strange and, frankly, really intimidating to me, the way people hang the world on their romantic attractions/relationships. It seems unnecessary, to turn that kind of love into a big production in a way we don't with other kinds of love, and it seems like a kind of entrapment and a kind of addiction. But I'd prefer to think that a person could be in that kind of love and not have it either go cool and dead after a while or grow to become sort of twisted and dependent and awful. I can think of people I know who are in what I would consider healthy romantic relationships and have been for some time, but then, I can think of a lot more who aren't, and haven't.
