I am very happy to report that my short story "Details from a Painting by Heironymous Bosch," which was reprinted at Behind the Wainscot, will also be appearing in Crawlspace, the Farrago's Wainscot anthology that's coming out in the fall. (Among many, many other fine stories -- check out the table of contents at that Crawlspace link.)

So, it's just over one year since The Daily Cabal started up, and we're celebrating with a bit of challenge. We're all writing stories starting with a line that Jay Lake was kind enough to give us: "Zoli liked to hang around psychiatrists' waiting rooms to hit on the low self-esteem chicks."

After the second or third online reference to it I'd come across in a few days, I sought out Junichiro Tanizaki's In Praise of Shadows, and managed to get my hands on a copy through the magic of interlibrary loan. I'll have to track down one of his novels at some point.

One of the things that happens with a daily project, if you stick with it, is that things begin to accumulate.

We've added a couple new cabalists over at The Daily Cabal and one of them, Alex Dally MacFarlane, debuts today  with a slightly sinister tale of furniture.

I think you'll find that she fits right in with the diverse crew we've got. I've been fan of her writing since reading "An Epic of Egg-like Proportions" over at Behind the Wainscot.

One of the fun things about writing lots of flash pieces is that I wind up writing in genres I didn't know existed. Like, say, Edward Gorey fanfic...

And, speaking of the Daily Cabal, stay tuned for a couple of new faces appearing among the roster of cabalists.
