I posted this in another LJ, but wanted to put it here. I don't think I ever really addressed my religious beliefs, and if I don't meet my quota of one hot topic every other LJ post, I may lose my "blog cred ( Read more... )

Having stopped going to church in the 2nd grade, I really did enjoy Vacation Bible School. I think my mom sent us to get us out her hair, though, since we seemed to go to a different faith every year. I know I went to Reformed, Catholic, Baptist, and Methodist. There had to have been a Christian Reformed at some point (hm, maybe that's the one that got struck by lightning).

It seems like every service I've been to since has the same themes:
1) Rock music is bad
2) Anyone not of our faith is bad
3) Anyone different than us is bad
4) If you're gay, you can be saved if you become straight (except at a Methodist church I went to in Boston; they were openly accepting of gays)
5) If you can get one of those evil people from the other faith over to our side, you can save them from eternal damnation

But I'm preaching to the choir here.

Yeah, I really didn't expect anyone to openly debate me on this. At the end of the day, debating religion is like pissing in the Grand Canyon.

One thing I forgot to add is I will never regularly take my kids to church, because religion isn't something I want to push on them. I'll tell them what *I* believe, and if they want to go Buddhist or whatever, cool. There is one religion, I think it's Christian Reformed actually, that doesn't baptise anyone until they're 18. I think that's a pretty good approach. We baptised Garrett, mostly to make the grandparents happy. I'm not sure Nutters will ever get baptised.

Although, I could just do it myself. In my Lutheran upbringing, we were taught we could baptise anyone in a pinch. Just bless the water, say the words as you do the baptism, and it's done. Whether this is BS or not is for the Catholics to decide. ;)
