It has been a long time... (taps microphone) I said, it has been a long time.
That isn't to say I haven't been eating. Mmm-hmm, that's what this journal was used for.
The fact of the matter is that I have been eating on many continents.
Sadly, all these continents were near large bodies of water and hence seafood heavy. (Me and seafood are like oil and water.) Nevertheless, I did try about a hundred variations of the multi-cheese pizza during my travels. The best would have to have been on the island of La Palma. This particular four cheese variant featured some of the island's favored goat cheese, aged to an olfactive pleasure fest, like a really good feta. The crust for this particular pizza was an odd choice, it was almost pastry-like, but not flaky. The sauce subdued by the pungent cheese and its oozing fat. Mmm.
I did not leave the islands without trying some more of the local flavor. I had this cheesy, roasted pepper, Gomerian sauce used for cooking as well as a dip for chips and crackers. When I tried it in the Wine and Cheese shop it was great. But upon sampling my newly purchased jar, I was disgusted.
Another Gomerian staple are these slow roasted potatoes in a zippy and spicy tomato sauce. I don't know what was in the sauce, but I confirmed that it was vegetarian. I also had fresh tropical fruit: papaya, mango, and avocado, separately, but all fresh. I also prepared a large mushroom (not this
one, but probably a similar species), I'd never had this type of mushroom before, it was very smooth and tender, like chicken(?).
Morocco abounds with vegetarian food but they were mostly variants of vegetables and cous-cous. I can't complain. The
tajine prepared vegetables were so tender and moist. Most dishes were flavored with a turmeric-based curry, there were few tomato-based sauces, which I found surprising.
Spain and Portugal were also seafood heavy. Most of the time I would purchase a roll, some cheese, and various fruits from the tiny grocery stores that line the European streets. I treated myself to a ritzy restaurant in Barcelona one night. The only item on the menu I could eat was a plate of roasted summer vegetables (carrots, squash, eggplant, corn, poblano peppers, and mushrooms). Coupled with a large dark beer, I was satiated and staggered to my room full of bubbly french teenagers.
