To whomever it may concern,
My name is ______. I am a sophomore who recently transferred from WSSU to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. My days have been spent struggling to maintain my grades, navigating the notably larger campus and involving myself in the community. Two weeks ago, I received an email from UNCW’s Health Center, requesting that I provide them with a copy of my immunization forms and further explaining that it is a requirement that must be completed by September 28th. Otherwise, I am liable to lose my classes and general place at UNCW. As it turns out, my family had decided to spend September through November in British Columbia, Canada because my stepfather wished to spread his father’s ashes and we believed my school year to be settled. Now it was my job to focus and, hopefully, excel.
I was unaware that I had missed such an important detail and my family was equally surprised when I was able to inform them. The portion of British Columbia my family resides in has the misfortune of lacking many commodities regularly used to communicate in North Carolina. I have received a mere one response from my family through email due to the inability to regularly be in contact with the internet. Phone lines are unreliable as well and cell phones seem entirely inaccessible.
As a result, I attempted to right the situation on my own. Quickly, I called WSSU’s Health Center in order to request a release of the forms to UNCW, but I was informed that I must physically come to sign a release form. Winston Salem, however, is four hours from Wilmington and I do not have transportation. Upon explaining my situation to the person on the other line, I was simply turned down. This was mildly discouraging, but I decided to talk to someone at the Registrar about an extension, but I was informed that it was the Health Center’s final word - and they were rather explicit about the requirement, which I understand.
As a transfer student, I had difficulty obtaining a ride from a student. However, I managed due to one individual’s incredible kindness; I realized quickly that WSSU’s Health Center was not open on the weekend and they did not wish to miss classes. I understood, of course. By this time, I tried calling my high school, West Brunswick High School. I have called repeatedly, been transferred to several individuals and, with each, I have received their voice mail. I have left messages and I have yet to receive a call’s return.
At the moment, I am filling out a release form to fax to a hospital in Cambridge, since I used to have appointments there. This, however, may be incomplete and thus useless. And so, I am writing this letter to both UNCW and WSSU. I have been immensely stressed and I’m terrified of losing my classes, my shelter, my insurance, and my place at UNCW. Please, I really am desperate to find a solution and cease worrying myself to such an extent. I will continue trying, but I do not want to lose so much in one week if my efforts are in vain. Please, consider my situation and I thank you so much for reading this letter and listening.
I will sign a release form for WSSU if I am informed of where to obtain one and I will fax it to WSSU’s Health Center. If someone agrees to my pleas, I would prefer it be faxed in light of the time constraints.
