Rue on Pell.Rue's relationship with Pell in camp has very little to do with Pell in camp and everything to do with his fear of losing what he's come to cherish here - namely, his friends and relationships

Cal doesn't really understand, and I don't think he ever will - he feels very little pity or empathy for Rue's *situation,* partly, I think, because although I don't doubt he's been in abusive relationships before, he's able to give just as good as he gets and/or he wasn't in love with the persons in question. He does, however, empathize with Rue's emotions. He'll tell everyone else that he only wants Rue and Pell to make up for Pell's sake, and while this is largely true, he wouldn't mind if Rue ended up benefiting from Pell being in camp.
I think it's unfortunate for Rue that I pulled Cal from so early in the timeline that he can't really empathize a whole lot with Rue. He's like Jesus Christ, just leave him if you're that miserable, not realizing that he himself will be pining after Pell for thirty plus years even though he half-hates Pell for putting him through so much.
I have no response to your essay that you haven't heard already, sadly, but... I'm not sure I've ever brought up the fact that Pell has no idea that Rue loves him.
No idea whatsoever. He's convinced that Rue hates him for torturing him in the future, and Pell has a rather vivid imagination. He doesn't know what he does, because no one really tells him anything definitive about his future. He doesn't know if he's abusive, or just cold, or if it's all emotional abuse.. he just thinks that the Rue in camp hates him for what he hasn't done yet, and it drives him crazy. My hope is that some day, he'll be tipped off to what actually happened. And that he and Rue will be able to have a conversation, that doesn't completely tear Rue to shreds. He'll probably never be able to think of Pell as someone else, and I can't figure out if that's a good thing or a bad one.
