Title: I Could Be There For You Fandom: Sherlock BBC Characters: John Watson, Sally Donovan Catergory: Gen Summary: On Christmas Eve, Sally tries to help John. There's a peppermint humbug. And coffee.
Oh, very nicely done. You've kept Sally in character, and let us see the brains which probably got her into the detective force as well. John's reactions are far too believable, also. I do love her whacking Sherlock with the clue stick, though I think that there's a good chance neither he nor John will stay off the case once they decide that the perpetrators of this bit of heinousness need to be caught.
Thank you so much for the lovely comment! I hadn't written any sort of fic in, literally, years. So it's good to see that I'm not actually traumatizing the masses (such as they are) lo;
Undoubtedly they won't stay away, especially since I know why the bombing went down and John won't be able to leave it alone. *crosses fingers*
Wonderful! The world needs more Sally Donovan fic. This was really well done. Is it the first chapter of something longer or a standalone? It could work either way (and actually functions perfectly as a standalone) but your above comment about knowing why the bombing went down makes me wonder if there's more!
It was intended as a standalone, but I originally had set out to have John utterly freak over the reason for the bombing, but he didn't seem to want to wait around for explanations and had a mini-panic ahead of schedule. XD
So I think I may do a related piece, but probably not in the spirit of an actual sequel.
This was a great read. I like when the secondary characters are given some of the limelight. Also, if Donovan is to be taken seriously, she must have some skills as a professional police sergeant. I am always glad to see the police written as competent people, even if they personally harbour a dislike for the freakish consulting detective. And, as a self-admitted Watson-fancier, a little mental anguish goes a long way for me! Well done!
It always kinda bothers me to the Yarders treated as morons, because by our standards they clearly are not. Anyone is gonna look like a fool standing next to Sherlock Holmes.
Sometime I'd like to write a piece in which Anderson is being competent at his job...
Many people who are competent in their jobs can be absolutely dreadful towards other people. Animosity, especially in the workplace, can make even good people behave abysmally. Anderson would have to be at least competent or else he would not have the job he has. That he has trouble with some psychopath-savant outsider having more talent has got to hurt. I doubt these guys would ever be friends, even if they are on the same side.
This is really nice - I like the characterization of Sally here. She does get people, even if she's a bit cynical - well, some would say practical - about their baser qualities.
I really liked this line especially: Sally wasn’t interested in letting two of the men she would least want to see on the other side of the law get any closer to the dark side if she could prevent it. I think it says a lot, not only that Sherlock and John would be holy terrors on the wrong side of the law, but that Sally recognizes the struggles they both have, especially John with all he's seen and done.
I definitely see Sally as a bit of a cynic, but not an unreasoning one. She's clearly a very intelligent person, to have gotten as far as she has. Homicide detectives in particular are not exactly known for being fools. And dealing with the kind of things she must, I see her as being no stranger to the dark side of humanity and the roads that lead there.
Well done. I like seeing Sally in character, but seeing more than we got to see in the series. Here we get to see her be both smart and caring-even if she's trying not to let her real reasons show.
I have a huge soft spot for caring!Sally, but the problem I've always had with fics like that is that people tend to make all of her bluster about Sherlock a facade. I believe there is most assuredly some real animosity there. However, animosity does not preclude caring. That's what I was trying to go for here. ;)

Good to see Sherlock get the message, too.
