House of Blues show (and why you should never go there unless Rufus is playing)

Apr 30, 2009 14:19

I'm home from Anaheim in my crappy home in the Mojave desert. I'm going to put my report under a cut because it will probably be long and babbly (you don't have to read if you don't want)

Ok, first of all, the House of Blues venue SUCKS! The actual part where you could see him the best was standing only, and I know many concert halls have that, but I don't like the idea of being surrounded by strangers standing on my feet for two hours. I went with my mom and dad and my dad is handicapped so we got in quickly, but the "balcony" part is made up of hard table chairs and benches which are ONLY reserved for people who specially paid for them. But my dad could sit in his electronic scooter in that area. My mom and I had to sit on frigging bar stools on the top tier! But it was worth having a sore ass for two hours! And so did the rest of the people. What kind of crappy ass seating is that?

While we were waiting for Lucy (Rufus' half sister, she has an extremely pretty voice), I looked down a tier to the left and recognised Loudon Wainwright! I thought that was cool because I don't think he ever comes to his son's shows (he'll come back in later).

Lucy came on at 8 o'clock, she said a nice HI! at the beginning. She played 5 songs, which I can't remember the names of. I personally, like her voice much better than Martha's (don't get me wrong I think Martha's fairly good, I just don't get why people think she's so talented. She bullshits with her voice to much (don't stone me! :\). I think it's Lucy's turn to shine :))

Loudon came out for Lucy's set and they sang a song he wrote in 1972 (of course, I forgot what it's called :p)

and then, the One and Only, complete a with Mickey Mouse ears cap (HOB is in Downtown Disney, which isn't actually at Disneyland) and I cheered and applauded with all might. I even gave him a two hands on the mouth MWAH! He was wearing black denim trousers, a blue denim-y shirt and a pretty pin of course (I wore more pins than he did!) Ok, this is not a set list, but songs from my memory (I'll probably forget some)

Going To A Town ("I'm so tired of homophobia!" being gay myself, I cheered like crazy!)
The Art Teacher
Sonnet 20 (A Woman's Face..)
EDIT:Beauty Mark
Vibrate
Release the Stars
Katonah w/Lucy
Gay Messiah (I looked at Loudon's face in the audiance when Rufus sang 'baptised in cum' he was unfazed) also w/Lucy
April Fools w/Lucy
EDIT: Not Ready to Love
Sansouci
Zebulon
California (he told his infamous Bea Arthur story, since she passed away, I'll write that later)
Little Sister (dedicated to Bea Arthur saying she was his little sister. Very sweet (and strange))
Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk (this is my dad's favorite)

ENCORE!
Old Paint w/dad and Lucy. At the end Loudon and Rufus pecked eachother on the cheek. It's so great they have a good relationship now!
Leaving for Paris *sigh*(I love this song so much. Some drunk dumbass shouted HALLELUJAH before he played), which segued into...
Hallelujah!

and that was it. Now for sound bites

When Lucy came out to sing Katonah with him, he said how they're hair is so similar and said "we would look great as dogs!"

and the Bea Arthur story just incase if you haven't heard it (I'm paraphrasing) : When Rufus was living in LA when he made his first album, he said he was lonely and would watch the Golden Girls all the time. He and Bea were both at a Gay and Lesbian fundraiser and he went up to her and said "I've been living here for awile and I've been watching Golden Girls constantly, and I would watch it with my grandmother when I was a kid and I'm far away from my family so I feel like your my surrogate/tv grandmother" and she said to him "I'M NOT YOUR FUCKING GRANDMOTHER!" and walked away. Heh

and another thing: see Rufus sometime in your lifetime, his voice is so much richer and powerful in person than on his albums. My mom told me before she thought he had a good voice, but not a great voice but her mind was definately changed after this. It was such an amazing experience. I didn't get to meet him or sign anything because people had special backstage passes (dammit, why didn't I research this more?!) so we figured he wouldn't come out in the open.

But seriously, the man has enough charm, musical talent, and charisma to fill up a football stadium. I just love him. And I swear he waved at me, because he was waving at the barstool people. Just to know he acknowledged my existence for a few seconds made my heart flutter. Did I mention I adore him?
UPDATE: I corrected my spelling mistakes and found a slideshow of good quality pics from this online Orange County magazine http://www.ocweekly.com/slideshow/view/8233734
he has a beard now. I know most people hate it, but I like it!
