Ruggs' List o' Character Tropes

I suppose one of my gripes, if I looked at it, are tropes. Tropes pop up often in roleplay and in writing, and what I wanted to do here was just lay out a list of them. It's Ruggs' "List the Tropes" time. Just a few things I need to get off my chest ( Read more... )

I did forget one aspect of the Fuzzy or Scaley Uglike, and that's that they're typically given short, brutal lifespans. ;)

I have to ask: What are you looking for? Most of these, as tired as they are, at least indicate SOME effort on the part of the player, actually rather more effort than reality has led me to ever expect.

Again, what do you WANT? What is an example of a well designed player character?

You didn't offend; sorry if I gave that impression. I was just confused. Again, in my experience, two sentences of background, no matter how lame or derivative, is about one and a half more than most players come up with. It seems a shame to complain about that.

And here I think we have to say, maybe it's all a different background? I'm used to a page or two. For a while, I was in charge of submissions for characters, and handled about two or three a week--hence the upset over tropes. The real treasures in a system like that are the folks who start looking beyond what's there, and asking, "how can I challenge myself?"
