Without Mum here to ply her green thumb, I've been keeping an eye on the garden in her place. It's yet another thing on a list of unfamiliar things to me so I didn't pay it much attention in the mild weekend weather

I think you've sent us some of your weather. We're supposed to be in darkest, wettest winter up here in That Other, Lesser Hemisphere and yet it is 30 C and the relative humidity is 4%.
