Anyone have ideas about where a relatively cheap external harddrive might be purchased?

If you can get in the door at a Circuit City that's closing, they might have some left!

Lots of ideas... do you need one really quickly, or in a couple of days? Do you want a wee 2.5" one to go with your laptop, or a great big 3.5" one to sit on your desk but hold a lot?

As for as I'm concerned, a couple of days = really quickly. I just want to do a backup of my laptop before I go home for Christmas although the sooner I get my act together the better I guess (given that I don't have one, it seems a bit unwise to drag it far away at the moment). Generally, smaller is better for me, but it's intended to sit on my desk and be used as an occassional backup option - there's only about 20 gigs of stuff on on my laptop at the moment and while it would be really nice to have a backup of everything, I don't think it's critical to have an up to the second backup.

For small drives, the cheaper ones tend to be 160GB drives. More expensive gets you 320GB. Time machine stores changes to files, so your use could grow, though unless you're saving video it's probably not going to grow that quickly. They generally don't require an external power brick like the 3.5" drives. Some 2.5" drives use 2 USB ports though, it's worth checking that before buying ( ... )

Thanks, I finally ordered a 2.5 inch hard drive. I get completely and totally overwhelmed by all the options out there.
