The second time I went for a walk with Sakito, the weather had turned cold, cold enough to frost the ground as it tended to do on late November mornings. I didn’t mind so much; the coffee shop we were heading for before practice would chase off the chill. A few of the trees still clung stubbornly to their withered leaves despite the fine dusting of ice, much like I was still clinging to the vain hope that Sakito would notice me someday.
He was obviously cold, having been taken by surprise by my offer for another stroll. Why he didn’t decline due to lack of appropriate outerwear, I don’t understand. I suppose the guitarist was so shocked I was making the effort that he said okay before thinking about it.
Valiantly, I pulled off my coat and dropped it on his thin shoulders from two steps behind. The expression on his face was priceless. “Ruka…?”
Before that moment I don’t think he’d ever bothered to look, I mean really look, at me, with that fathomless gaze of his reserved for truly epiphanic moments. Shrugging, I walked ahead while Sakito tried to puzzle out my actions, basking in my small victory.
“Wait.” It didn’t take him long to catch up. “We can share.”
Sakito draped half the coat over my shoulders in a fit of some emotion I had never seen in him before. It didn’t really fit over both of us, but hell if I cared. To get to be this close to him, and willingly, was an indescribable joy.
