"He looks like you."

"No he doesn't."

She smoothed a fine curl of hair back from the baby's head and twisted it gently between her fingers until it stood up straight in a soft little spike. "He does."

"Then I must be a damn ugly looking guy."

She laughed. The baby was pink and wrinkled, less than a day old. He had a face like an old, wizened man and eyes that seemed as if they'd seen the world before, despite the fact that right now she knew they could barely focus on anything.

"It was meant as a compliment."

"Yeah well." He huffed a little, smoothing out the little spike of hair carefully. She didn't miss his gaze as it focused intently on the child's features, searching for something familiar in that brand new face.

Damn her anyway.

"He looks like you," she insisted, her hand reaching out to touch his cheek softly, reassuringly. The fingers of her hand trembled as they mapped out the contours of his cheek.

He closed his eyes and leaned into the touch a little. She caught his smile with the knuckle of her index finger. "I know."
