Summary: Akira's life was nothing more than lonely clockwork.
Life was hard. But then again, no one ever said it was supposed to be easy. Day in, day out, it was just a vicious, continuous cycle. Akira would rise from bed, slink to the shower, get dressed, head off to work, come home, go to sleep, repeat. On occasion, he would have a visitor or maybe go out for a drink or two.
Generally though, his life was just that dreaded cycle. It made him miserable. Akira missed the dating. Having someone to come home to. Someone to share everything with- no matter how stupid it was. Everyone was meant to have someone, right?
He sat up and picked up his phone, the screen lighting up. The clock glowed 4:30, along with a little message notification in the corner. He looked at it confused. Usually the only person to text him was Takanori who quit sending him messages past a certain hour. He knew Akira’s schedule and didn’t bother after they said their ‘good nights’, so it struck him odd that he’d be up at this hour. It was probably just a wrong number, or maybe one of Kouyou’s infamous drunk texts.
Heaving a sigh, he pulled up the message log. Surprisingly, it wasn’t Kouyou. It was Takanori. Akira continued staring at it confused as he clicked the ‘read now‘:
From Taka:
" … Ugh. I had the worst dream."
He continued staring blankly at the screen. That was… Random. Usually he’d send a picture of Koron, or the food he was eating or sometimes even what he was wearing. Or just a random message about whatever it was he was doing. But never something worrisome like that.
Sent: From Akira:
"Are you ok?”
He crossed his legs and placed the phone in his lap. He was debating if he should call up the singer or not. A few minutes passed- nothing. Akira shrugged and set the phone aside to go get ready for work. Stripping his pajamas, the buzz of a notification surprised him. Darting over to grab it, his heart sank when it was just his alarm going off.

Around noon, as he had just finished replacing some cables in a car, his phone rang. Again, it was just Taka. Wiping the grease and oil from his hands, he smiled. He usually spent his lunch chatting with his friend, and returned to work with a light heart and an empty stomach. It didn’t bother him though. On the darkest days, Takanori always knew just what to say.
The hours seemed to fly by after their noon conversation. It turns out Taka’s nightmare was nothing more than just his brain recreating a scene that he’d seen in some horror film- except he was in the characters place. All they could do was laugh about it, which left Takanori feeling better in the end. Anyways, Akira was excited for this evening. Since his day off was the following day, he was going to drop by at home for a little bit, grab some things and then head off to the auburns’ home. They were just going to hang out like they did when they were younger. Both seemed to be really looking forward to it.
Upon Akira’s arrival, it hit him that his friend had spent the past 2 hours prepping his house for him. Everything was more spotless than usual.
“Expecting the queen or something?” Akira chuckled as he stepped inside.
“Well of course.” Takanori retorted, “You’re just the act for the evening~”
“Oh, you’re so funny, I forgot to laugh.” Akira set his bag on the floor beside the black couch and plopped down on it. Takanori followed beside him.
“Oho~ I’m fucking -hilarious-.” He smirked and flicked on the TV. Some Horror marathon was on, and it seemed that was what they were going to do all night. Just chill and probably scare the shit out of each other when they were tired enough.
~
Some time into their little movie marathon, Akira noticed something a bit off. Takanori did nothing to try and strike up a conversation. Instead, he just sat there, fidgeting with his fingers or petting the dog. Like his mind was somewhere else.
“Hey… Taka…” He nudged him, “Are you okay?”
“Nn! Yeah!” He responded immediately, “I’ve just… Seen these like a thousand times.” He laughed dryly.
Akira leaned forward and grabbed the remote,
“We could watch something else…” Taka snatched the remote and began flipping channels. The only other things on were infomercials or some overdramatic teen drama. The blond proposed that they should watch the drama, then laugh about it when it ended. The small man smirked and nodded in agreement. Since the channel flipped, Akira couldn‘t bring himself to actually watch it. 'How could anyone -enjoy- these?!' He thought as he looked around. Taka seemed somewhat interested into it, his gaze completely fixated on the screen.

The show ended in a predictable “forbidden love” romance; the ‘bad boy’ fell in love with the ‘good girl’, they live happily ever after. How romantic.
“Blech.” Akira groaned as the credits rolled down the screen Takanori stretched and snickered,
“It wasn’t -that- bad-” he stopped, “Ugh. It was fucking terrible.” The small man slipped off the couch, shuffled over to the TV stand and put a random disk into the DVD player
“What, need to flush out the mushy-bullshit with blood an-” Akira was cut off.
“Would you ever do that?”
“… Huh?”
“Y’know…” The auburn stared at a spot the floor, “Would you ever do something considered… Taboo?” Something about his tone was weird as he sat back down. Akira continued to sit back, arm stretched across the back of the couch,
“Have you ever done anything… Odd?” He mumbled, his voice almost inaudible. The blond sat up and leaned his head close to the others’, trying to hear him,
“What did you say-” He felt something quickly touch his cheek. Something soft. Warm. Something like Takanori’s lips. Akira’s face suddenly got hot. His heart pounded in his chest.
Did...
Did he just do that?
"Ah… I-I’m sorry-” Takanori went to turn his head away, raising a hand to his lips to hide the uncontrollable quivering. Akira did something he’d never even think of doing.
He gently grazed his fingers along Takanori’s cheek,
took his hand,
shifted closer,
and kissed him back.
Akira was overcome by the feeling of a fuzzy warmth wrap around the coldness inside his chest. He felt something fill that dark emptiness inside him. Takanori pulled away and leaned into Akira’s chest. His face was so red and his smile so big. He laughed out of embarrassment. Akira joined him as he wrapped his arms around Taka.
“I-I love you…” The auburn muttered as he swiftly wiped the embarrassed tears from his eyes.
And that’s when it hit Akira.
“I love you too.”
