It was such a simple question...
"Mom, where's my dad at?"
Though the small 'family' had already thrown a small celebration for Roy (complete with a homemade cake from Rose) in honor of Father's Day, her son's question seemed to come completely from left field. Her usually calm exterior dissolving, Rose quickly brought a hand to her hair to brush it back, masking her face long enough to steady her wavering expression.
"Your dad? ...He's busy right now."
The boy frowned slightly, shifting his feet. He was at the age where it seemed impossible for him to stand still. "Too busy for us? What about Father's Day?"
Though the soft smile never left her full lips, the woman couldn't hide the pained look in her eyes.
"John...He'll come back to us. I know he will." Her smiled widened. "I'm sure he's thinking about us right now."
This seemed to be enough to pacify the boy. Distracted already, John turned and raced down the hall at full speed, no doubt in pursuit of his new plastic sword.
Unable to suppress it, the brunette woman sighed, hoping that she would be right in the end after all.
