I was a customer of Wells Fargo for 5 years, then they sent me a letter that they were switching my free checking account to a $7 a month account. I closed my account and opened one at a local credit union.

I don't have a debit card. At both Wells Fargo and the credit union, I specifically asked for an ATM-only card. Debit cards are a REALLY bad idea; if anything goes wrong (computer error, fraud, etc), the money comes out of your checking account immediately and you have to fight to get it back.
