Previously on Once Upon a Time: after they copy-pasted Rumple's character onto Emma, they copy-pasted it onto Hook too. Clearly we are in the presence of master writers

They brought all the Dark Ones? I feel cheated if we don't see Brad Dourif.
Word to your entire post, but especially the above. If I have to sit through this, I want Zoso talking to Avatar-Rumple -- scenes four years in the making.
What really frosts my corn flakes is the entirety of Rumple's arc after 3A would have made more sense BEFORE he heroically sacrificed himself. Never mind, though, they can use the bass-awkward plotting as another McGuffin to open a portal to Hell, because they can use the blood of someone who has been to Hell and back. *Slow golf clap*
I've lost track of all the special blood and special hearts and other special body parts that get redefined for the spell of the week. "We need the heart of the truest believer! We need the heart of a man who knew Rumple before he was the dark one! We need the tear of a recent lost love! We need the blood of someone with Darkness! We need the blood of someone who's been to hell and back!"
Word. That's been one of my big problems with everything from 3B and beyond, that they apparently decided they didn't want Rumpel to try to be good after all and he had to go dark again. And punish him any time he tries to do the right thing. One reason why I decided that everything after 3A is not part of the show canon for me. Sigh.
I just watched some clips of the Rumbelle scenes on You Tube and now I seriously wish I hadn't. : ( I'm embarrassed by how sad it made me, but I just couldn't help it. In the first few seconds of the well scene I actually thought that it was going to be the start of Rumbelle healing, but then it went down hill so fast. : ( Does anybody else feel like the writers might actually hate Rumbelle shippers? : (
They don't hate us. They simply didn't plan Rumbelle beyond Skin Deep, evidenced by EdR being a guest star instead of a regular. They then spent the next four years not having a clue how to properly adapt Beauty & the Beast (an automatically adaptable tale) for RC (who made a Johnny Walker corporate short epic). As Shadow says, we are in the presence of master story tellers.
Skin Deep was such a beautiful episode. When the writers care, they can create really wonderful stories. That's part of the reason why Broken Heart made me so sad. The well scene just really seemed to come out of nowhere, most especially after Belle told Rumple it was never too late in The Bear and the Bow. My theory is that maybe Hook or Zelena stole Belle's heart or put a spell on her to hurt Rumple. But to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if turned out to be just sloppy writing. : (
