Round three planning poll

Aug 18, 2013 11:38

Here's where I ask for some input on planning for round three. None of it's binding in any way--I'm just trying to see what would work best for the most people. Something to keep in mind when you vote: as far as I know, none of these time periods include any major US holidays*, so any kind of "I can't do it this day" thing we do will be no more ( Read more... )

The idea of RPF also makes me uncomfortable...

For me, it feels wrong to write about real people. But, to each their own I suppose. It seems that there should be a place for just RPF (maybe you can start that) so then this can be JUST fandom if that makes any sense!

Yes, there is a comm for WC RPF. However, the challenges that I've modeled this challenge on (from the Supernatural fandom) allow both SPN and SPN RPF fic. I love RPF, and I personally don't appreciate the way WC RPF is so separated from WC. I prefer to see them mingled together much of time--nobody is required to write or read it, just as nobody is required to read or write slash or het or gen.

That makes sense. I guess it's up to a mod of the comm and what you think personally. I'd never allow RPF but if you think it's cool, then go for it!

There were a couple of the questions I answered that I felt I could have answered better but there wasn't a good choice for me. The time periods, I am just not sure yet. I have BBs that are posting during October and November. In September I have drafts due - so that makes that choice hard for me.

For the RPF - I am not a big fan of that - I know people like it so I won't squish anyone's Squee about it. But it does give me the willies. So while I don't care if there's RPF, in the end I probably really should have said I won't participate. I think I have to be true to myself first but I don't have any issues with other people liking it. You know what I mean? I don't want to sound like I am judging people - I'm not. I just not into that.

That's cool! I honestly don't get the need for such separation. I mean, some people are grossed out by het or slash or poly or feel like gen is utterly pointless (and there are certainly people who think that slash and poly are WRONG), but it's okay for those things to be mixed because people just read/write what they like. I'm not sure how RPF is so different.

Just saw the wrap-up post, so thank you for yet another great round!

Personally I have no qualms with RPF, though even if it were allowed I probably wouldn't end up writing it - I just happen to be more inspired by their characters, that's all. Also, I think the idea of a h/c round was mentioned? I'd be all over that. Possibly a rare pair round might be nice, too. And I know this fandom has more love for Gen than any other fandom I'm involved in... but I have know idea if I'd actually be able to reign in my shipping enough to keep it at Gen level LOL

I now need someone to write me a ficlet about Neal with a sadface because someone stole his blankey.

That being said, I'll be on vacation from Oct 11 through Oct 29, so the second option is impossible for me. I would probably sign up for the other two options (or at least option 1), if it's allowed to veto certain days (like before). I just don't know if/when I'll be online (except those days I'll spend at Elr's place, she'll probably chain me to the laptop if I were to be tagged! O_o LOL)

Plus, as was mentioned, Novemeber is NaNo, and S5 starts in mid-October, so I guess the first option would be best. :)

I voted no to RPF because, like many others, it makes me uncomfortable. However, everyone should be free to do whatever they enjoy, so I'd still sign up, I just wouldn't read the fic. *shrugs*

I will be allowing the veto to option no more than two days. Last time was just way too stressful for me with people vetoing a whole week--and then even that wasn't enough to make everybody happy. :\

Thanks for your input.

Why not have an RPF round? Everybody wins. :D

To my way of looking at it, I guess, RPF is a completely separate fandom. That's how it's categorized on both AO3 and Yuletide. (Yuletide always allowed Stargate Atlantis RPF, for example, even though it was a huge fandom, because there wasn't much RPF for it.) It's a fandom that some people in WC fandom are also into, which is cool. And some are not, and that is also okay.

Mixing them seems sort of like ... I dunno, having White Collar fic and Chuck fic in the same comm because they share an actor. Which you could totally do, of course! But it's not a slap in the face to Chuck fans if a lot of people in the fandom would prefer to just read stories about Neal rather than reading stories about Bryce.

I see what you're saying, and yet to me they are two aspects of the same fandom. I don't plan on doing an RPF round because the RPF part of the fandom is probably too small for that.

Thanks for your input.

And (speaking for me, but I guess also for the others) we see what you're saying, but to me (us), they are and always will be two different fandoms with different "characters". So, just like certain pairings or categories, we should be allowed to like or not like a fandom (or an aspect of the same fandom).

Neal/Sara makes my skin crawl. I think I'm allowed to say that I don't like this pairing, as long as I'm respectful about it. I'd never attack anyone for writing/reading/enjoying that pairing. I don't really see what's different to saying that RPF is not my thing (and I haven't seen a single disrespectful comment about this here), but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that.

Be that as it may, please disregard my votes as I will not be participating in the next round so I believe I shouldn't have a say in when or how it'll happen. Thanks!

Absolutely it's fine not to like Neal/Sara or RPF or whatever! Really, that's kind of my point--that any challenge is going to contain some fic that some people don't want to read. So, if there were to be one or two RPF fics, that's the same as one or two Neal/Sara fics, at least IMO. And het doesn't have to hide off in the locked-up corners of the fandom.

I'm sorry you won't be participating.
