Rose completely blamed Marina Del Rey on this situation. Her trip to California had been so wonderful, and so different than from what she knew in New York, that it hadn’t taken much for her to get completely carried away and fall in love with the beaches and the water, and take advantage of the fact that nobody here would recognize her; nobody would remember her when she left in a little more than a month.
She wasn’t even sure that she remembered his name. Austin, maybe. His last name was a complete mystery, but Rose knew that he had the prettiest green eyes that she had ever seen, and he seemed fascinated by her hair in the sunset. He said it looked like her head was aflame, like she was some sort of avenging angel. Like an idiot, she had swooned and it didn’t take long for her to fall into his arms.
The first time they had sex, they hadn’t even worried about protection. She had been far more worried about the tide suddenly coming in and sweeping them out to sea, because they had undressed under an empty boardwalk and lay on beach towels. It had startled her when the waves washed over her feet, but he had adequately distracted her.
And now here she was, holding a stolen pregnancy test and hiding in a cramped airplane bathroom on her way back to New York. She felt dizzy and it wasn’t from turbulence, and for a horrid second she wished that something would go wrong and she would miscarry. She was only seventeen - not even an adult. What would she do with a kid? She could barely take care of herself, and this situation obviously proved that point.
Alice would help, somehow. Alice wouldn’t tell their parents, at least, and Rose liked to think that she would at least help her out when the time came. When the time came to do... what? Abortion was an option, but it was out of the question. She had heard plenty of things about that procedure, and what could go wrong, and it made her stomach roll to think about that being done to her. Adoption, maybe? That seemed more doable. But the idea of - this; it scared the living daylights out of her. The idea of having something living inside of her and feeding off of her for nine months; the idea of giving birth; the idea of having to raise a child. It terrified and overwhelmed her.
Rose let the pregnancy test drop to the bathroom floor, before resting her face in her hands and exploding into sobs.
