Rayne had watched, amused, as Faith and Chloe dug around in the storage closet, both offering stories about what they found and making sure they didn’t hurt themselves. Her offers to help were declined with the usual childish “We can do it by ourselves!”. When Chloe managed to dig out an old and batter Ouija box, Rayne had only raised an eyebrow and answered their questions about what it supposedly did. Their pleads of if they could play with it were answered less quickly.

Rayne wasn’t one to believe in anything spiritual. She wasn’t religious, she wasn’t superstitious, and horror movies didn’t give her the heeby-jeebies. But she wasn’t one to underestimate the imagination of children, and letting them play with something could easily lead to two little girls wanting to sleep in the bed with her and Sarah later that night. Then again, it could also lead to some interesting opportunities for a prank or two.

So, she told Sarah what was up, and ignored her wife’s warning to play nice, and supervised the spontaneous séance. If it could be called that. As far as she could tell, it was two kids sitting around a board with letters and numbers on it, and pretending that a ghost was pushing it around. Eventually, they spooked themselves enough that they stopped, and Rayne rounded them up and passed them over to Sarah to get them ready for bed. And then she put her plan into action.

Somehow, she managed to squeeze herself under the twin sized bed the girls would be sharing, and waited. She saw two pairs of tiny, bare feet wander into the room, with a familiar pair of Converse behind them. When Sarah dutifully checked under the bed, Rayne pressed a finger to her lips and gave her best pair of puppy dog eyes. It was met with a blank stare before Sarah rolled her eyes and pronounced that underneath the bed was monster free. Rayne doubted that the kids heard Sarah mutter about how evil aunts were another matter.

She continued to wait until the whispers and giggles above her stopped, and turned into sleepy murmurs. Once she was sure that the kids were close to sleep, but not quite there, Rayne moved. Sneaking out from under the bed as quietly as she could, she reached up to grab their ankles, before she felt Faith and Chloe start to kick and realize they weren’t alone.

Their screams drowned out Rayne’s laughter. By the time Sarah made it to the bedroom, Rayne was fighting off two very unamused, pillow wielding eight year olds.
