Every now and then, voices on the wind,
I may love you always and always.
Far away and clear, you can hear the teardrops,
Falling for the last in love.
--George Strait, “Last in Love”
Rayne loved Angie when she had been up for days, writing songs that she barely go halfway through composing before another was started, her temper offset at the smallest thing with apologies falling from her mouth just as quickly.
She loved her when she went into dark places that Rayne somehow knew everything about, and yet nothing of, pain she couldn't imagine floating around in Angie's head until she could manage to surface long enough to breathe and pull herself to shore.
Rayne loved her the most when Angie turned and asked if they could have their last conversation, just to have something good, weeks before Death came for her.
Years later, love still woke her in the middle of the night, and Rayne would reach for her before reality would whisper, cruel in its simple truth, that she wasn’t there.
