Olivia was looking everywhere but at him, one foot scuffing slowly against the concrete. She did that when she was nervous, or unhappy; the familiarity of the movement made his stomach tight.
"I have to go," she was saying, and he drank up her voice, memorized the tilt of her head. "I have to. Please don't be angry with me."
He was angry with her, angry and heartbroken, and this might be the last time he'd ever see her. The last time.
"Jake?" She looked at him now, tears on her eyelashes like diamonds.
He kissed her, hard, and ran.
