He dreamed of swimming through boiling hot water that seared his lungs as he tried to breathe. Someone screamed in the distance; the water hardened around him into his covers, and he opened his eyes and everything was burning.

He fell out of bed, and tried not to cry when his burned hands throbbed. He crawled to the door, but it was too hot to touch. He cried out; no one answered.

He couldn't get out, and no one was coming to get him.

Jake hid his face in his knees so he couldn't see the fire coming closer.

"I don't understand," Jake said. "I know my grades suck, but I got 175 on the LSAT. That has to count for something."

"Jake..." His advisor sighed. "I talked to a friend in admissions. You can't tell anyone she passed this on, because it's illegal, but we both thought you should know."

"She told you why I didn't get in?"

"They feel that..." A pause-- his advisor choosing words. "They feel staying untreated makes you unsuitable for practicing law."

Jake froze. "...but I don't talk about that," he said. "I can't."

"I know," his advisor said. "But that's that."

"Damn it," Jake said, balled the letter up, and pitched it across the room.

Brian looked up from his magazine. "Didn't get the job?"

"No," he said. "Damn. I was looking forward to getting away from Mr. DeForrest."

"He is kind of a dick," Brian said. "But I hear Ms. Hirschfeld's a hardass. You'd have to do a hell of a lot more work."

Jake shot him a dirty look. "I already do all the work. I just want the credit."

"Good luck with that," Brian said, and went back to reading.

Oh well. He'd get the next one.

There was a pretty girl playing the organ.

Jake reviewed that sentence, winced, and revised. There was a pretty girl playing the piano, brow creased in concentration. Their usual piano player was elderly, cross and definitely not as goodlooking, so Jake let his eyes rest on her.

Curly brown hair tucked behind her ears framed a round, delicate face. She had gorgeous hands, and a patient, graceful posture when she wasn't playing. Beautiful.

He wondered if he should go say hi after the service, then dismissed the thought.

He was way too fucked up for a girl like her.

Olivia's eyes were shining with tears, and he almost, almost broke down and said never mind. Forget what I said. I'll take you back, and everything will be all right again.

Except it wouldn't, would it?

She'd left him. It would always come back to that. She'd left him, and there was nothing stopping her from leaving him again. He loved her, he did, but he couldn't stand to have his heart broken that badly again. He couldn't.

Better to just forget it. Better not to even try.

"I can't," he said, again, and pretended his heart wasn't breaking.

"Daddy!" Elena called. "Tie my shoe please!"

"Daddy!" Vivian howled. "Felicity called me stupid!"

"Daddy!" Felicity shrieked. "Vivian pulled my hair!"

And people thought government was hard. Jake waded into the fray.

"Vivian Rose, do not pull your sister's hair," he said, tying Elena's shoe. Just as Felicity smirked, he added, "Felicity Jane, stop provoking Vivian."

"Oh, Daddy!" they said, united in disdain.

He ignored them, moved to Olivia, tucked a curl behind her ear, and stole a kiss. "Why did we have children?"

She smiled at him. "You love it."

"And you," he said, then kissed her again.
