Summary: Leigh sets things in motion.
Notes: Sorry, this is late. The ship sometimes makes it hard to keep up with things :/ I’ll be more on top of it after these two. Decided to do each as a Hot Fudge. Peanut Butter Week.

Leigh could tell that her and Will’s relationship was slowly tearing him inside out. She was fairly certain that he could not see it or maybe he just didn’t want to, but she knew. She sent the message while he was sleeping. The next morning, they said their goodbyes. Will promised to be back within a month.

She said nothing and after he left, she looked around the small house. It had to go. She had to cleanse it too, couldn’t leave anything behind that might connect Will to her. She silently apologized to the owners and lit the flame.

Summary: Roderick doesn’t much like Dean, but can’t help grudging respect.
Notes: From Pirates! (last year’s NaNo). Peanut Butter Week. Dean’s eighteen or thereabouts here.

The boy was dragged in front of him, obviously dazed from the fall, fingers still curled like they wanted to grab the rigging. One arm dangled uselessly at his side. Roderick briefly outlined the traditional punishment, ignoring the heir’s attempts to talk him out of it. “Once the waters have calmed and we’re closer to shore, practice dictates that you must walk the plank.” A quick conference with the ship’s mate had yielded a unanimous vote in favor if tradition.

“What?” Dean said, starting to come out of his daze.

“You’re to walk the plank. But we’ll give you a sporting chance,” Roderick assured him. “No bonds.”

“You know he can’t swim!” the heir yelled. “He told you himself! You’re sentencing him to death.”

“The sea, Miss Elizabeth, is not always a forgiving place. We lost two of our own last night and there was nothing we could do. There is nothing we can do for Mr. Dean. He knew the risks when he boarded the ship and now he will pay the consequences.”

He gestured for Dean to be taken below decks and he watched the boy go. He couldn’t say he was disappointed to see Dean go. The boy was an unnecessary thorn in his side, but he had to admit he had done the entire crew a favor by climbing that mast, even if his weight had helped shatter it. He glanced between the boy and the mast for another moment before shrugging. Traditions were traditions and he certainly wasn’t go to break them for a teenager he didn’t even like. It was something of a shame the boy couldn’t swim, though. He would have made a good pirate.
