“Let me sleep,” she complained, rolling over and covering her head with a pillow.

The blanket Max had thrown over her the night before was no longer doing its job but he didn’t look away. He was past that, especially with this being his bed she was sleeping in.

Max rolled his eyes. “Please, please, please get out of my bed.”

He was sitting on the side of the bed, shaking her by the shoulder while she tried to get aw far from him as possible, curling up in the corner against the wall.

“Why?” Her voice was muffled by the pillow. “I don’t wanna. It’s early.”

“Fine, you crazy, evil bitch, just stay here and if you decide to go away, please, please put some clothes on. Even if they are my clothes, just put something on, okay?”

She didn’t answer and all Max could do was roll his eyes again and get up, though not before shooting her an evil look and throwing the blanket over her. If anybody came in, then at least the first thing they would see wouldn’t be a naked woman.

They were sitting on the floor with the map spread out in front of them and, armed with pens, were working out the escape route. Since there was no computer available at the moment, Kennedy and Max had decided to approach it this way and Leo had left after half an hour, annoyed at what he called “stupid flirtations”. Not that either Kennedy or Max really minded. It had been a while since they had seen each other.

“Has he gotten moodier since we first met or is it just me?”

“He is going through a phase of self-pity, nothing to worry about. It will go away sooner or later,” Kennedy assured him, scooting closer and touching his hand ever so carefully.

“I have things I would like to go away, too. Sooner rather than later,” Max muttered under his breath, not really sure how things would work out if Kenendy found out about the wasted, naked woman in his bedroom. They both were more than aware that their situation wasn’t the best as it was, with Kennedy being a fugitive everyone was looking for and who couldn’t really stay in one place for long. He wasn’t sure if a woman in his bed would make this harder than it was already or was just a minor problem, everything considered.

“I hope you’re not talking about me,” Kennedy smiled and Max pulled her closer, embracing her. 7

“By now, you’re the main reason to take Cerberus down: That’s what I need gone. Cerberus and moody Leo and pretty much every other problem in my life. Not you though.”

She leaned in, ready to kiss him when the door flew open, startling both of them. When Max looked into the direction of the loud noise, he saw exactly what he had been afraid of. At least she was wearing some clothes of hers that she had probably found in one of his drawers.

Kennedy was staring as well, eyes wide and a bit confused but it subsided fast enough and she smiled that amused crooked smile. “Helena!”

The dark-haired woman standing in the doorway grinned, more than a hint of recognition in her eyes. “If that isn’t the treacherous Kennedy West-Lawson.”

A friendly hug followed as Max watched in awe He felt a new fear he hadn’t thought of yet grow inside him. He wasn’t in for anything good if his love interest and crazy ex were old friends. His instincts told him to run as fast as he could.
