Bug ran up, grinning, panting. I was terrified that she would trip on something, but as always, her little feet showed no sign of hesitation. She looked a sight, now. When I had met her, she’d been clad in a shapeless shift that looked like dingy bandages. Since I had arrived, we’d both been dressed in page’s livery. She looked almost like a picture from a playing card, if someone had put a black velvet mask over the Knave of Hearts’ eyes.
I half embraced-half caught her, and she righted herself quickly. From beneath her tunic she produced a tiny crystalline bottle. As quickly as it had come, however, it was tucked back away.
“What is that?” I whispered, though it sounded impossibly loud to my own ears.
Accordingly, Bug held a finger to her lips. “A sleeping draught.” Her voice was quieter than the air. She knew what kind of dangerous game we were playing.
“Did you…?”
She nodded. “In her hippocras,” she whispered, and took my arm, absurdly, as though we were strolling in the park.
“Who is with her?” I asked.
“Rust,” she replied. “Just him. He won’t ruin it.” She let her hand slip down my arm, until she reached my hand, and clasped it.
And so it was that Bug and I climbed the tall tower, higher even than the top aviary, to the place where none of us had ever seen. The place where Lady Bloodrose slept. The place where she kept all her most precious trinkets.
