“Shotgun.” Kairn grinned at Sethan as he dropped the hand that had been about to open the passenger door of Reida’s car.

Sethan rounded on him with a scowl. “You want me to scrunch in behind you?”

“Learn to call it,” said Reida, as she swept by, fishing her keys out of her pocket.

“There’s room in the middle.” Kairn reached for the door, juggling backpack and egg as he swung it open.

Reida rounded the Volkswagen’s crumpled nose and slid into the driver’s seat, and Sethan curled up in back, making a show of tucking his legs under his chin as if there wasn’t ample room in front of him. The other two paid him no notice. Reida jammed her key in the ignition, a whole host of jingling baubles and chains dangling off it to slap against her thigh, and went poking about in her pockets again. Kairn tucked his bag between his feet and frowned at the egg for a moment before settling for cradling it over his lap.

“Are you just going to walk around with that thing like it’s glued to your palm for the next week?” Reida asked.

“N-no, I, er… You’re supposed to take it sometimes too, you know.”

Reida snorted. “Yeah, we’ll see about that.” She tucked a cigarette between her teeth and turned the key.

“Can you wait until we’re out of the lot at least?” Kairn called, over the music that roared to life with the start of the engine, glowering at her cigarette.

She shot him a look as she backed out of the space. “Why?” she said, killing the volume on the stereo. “Are you going to rat on me?”

“No,” said Kairn. “It’s just, if anyone saw you-”

“You can’t give him a ride if you’re in detention is what he’s trying to say.”

Kairn shifted the egg to his other hand so he could reach back and give Sethan a smack across one of his awkwardly folded legs.

“You need to lighten up, both of you,” said Reida, but she’d taken the cigarette back out of her mouth anyway.

“You know smoke is bad for the baby,” Sethan said.

Kairn shot him a glare and Sethan smirked back at him. “It’s not a baby, it’s an egg. I’ll bet the damned thing is pasteurized even. I don’t see what it has to do at all with a baby.”

“Right,” said Reida. “You don’t care about it in the least. That’s why you’ve been coddling it all afternoon.” The cigarette found its way back to her mouth as they pulled onto the street.

“So I’d like to get a decent grade,” he said. “You’ll thank me later.”

At the first light, she was fumbling with her lighter. “You don’t have to hold it though. It’s not like you’re watching for it to hatch.”

Kairn jabbed the button for his window as she blew her first puff of smoke. “I’m not stuffing it in my bag either.”

“There’s some napkins in the glove compartment.” Kairn flinched as she gestured with the cigarette.

“Thanks,” he muttered, popping it open. He grimaced at the tangled mess inside. Loose CD’s, the charger for Reida’s phone, a pack of tampons - maybe he shouldn’t have opened it after all - there, wadded against the side of the glove box, was a stack of assorted fast food napkins. He grabbed a handful and snapped the door shut before anything could fall out.

Kairn turned to peer at Sethan as he swaddled the egg. “You’ve been awfully quiet.”

“Huh?” Sethan lifted his chin from his knees, blinking, and shook his head. “I was just… thinking.”

“You’re coming to my place, right? When Reida drops us off?” He unzipped the front pocket of his bag and peeked inside. A calculator, a few pencils - he tucked the napkin-wrapped egg in gently beside them.

“Yeah, sure,” said Sethan absently.

Kairn pulled the zipper shut and prodded the pocket to see if the egg moved. “What about you, Reida?”

“Nah,” said Reida. “I’m just dropping you two off. Gran needs me to babysit tonight.”

“Oh,” said Kairn.

Reida laughed, filling the car with a thick puff of smoke. “Yeah,” she said, “and you thought you were having a bad day.”
