Strawberry Banana #24. Bird Watching with Chopped Nuts
Story : knights & necromancers ( High School AU)
Timeframe : Wednesday (I think?)
Word Count : 768
Rating : PG

I wanted to post this all in order, but I give up. Right now I'd be happy to write anything at all, much less fill this out. So, good old RaTs style, I am going to give you what I've got (in order) and fill it in later. The rest of the au is here. Not sure what happens Tuesday, but Wednesday morning they find out the trig test didn't go so well for most and there will be a makeup, so Kairn's got more studying to do.

“What are you looking at?” said Reida as she slid into place on the bench next to Kairn.

On the other side of him, Sethan had his nose in a notebook and hadn’t said a word since they’d sat down. Kairn’s attentions had been focused across the room and on the fact that Lyssa’s cheerleading uniform included a skirt that barely covered even a small fraction of her thighs. Not that he was about to tell Reida that.

He quickly looked down at his tray instead and poked at his fries. “Nothing,” he mumbled, feeling his cheeks burn.

Reida sniffed, and when Kairn glanced up, he caught her eyes on Lyssa. “You like ‘em without any self-respect, huh?”

“I hang out with you, don’t I?”

“You do, don’t you?” She threw an arm across his shoulders and leaned in with a grin, playfully fingering the tips of her short ruddy-brown hair. “You know, there’s a lot Lyssa and I have in common.”

Kairn shifted uncomfortably on the bench. “What? Like half the football team?”

“Cute.” She disengaged her arm and slumped back into her own seat with a smack to his back. “Maybe we should stick with the differences.”

“Right,” said Kairn. “She’s got at least two cup sizes on you.”

Her mouth fell open in mock indignation and she cupped her hands over the side of the egg. “Not in front of the baby!”

“Like it hasn’t heard worse being around you.”

Reida pouted. She plucked a fry from her tray, twirled it thoughtfully for a moment, and chewed on the end. “You know,” she said, turning back to him. “I have plenty on Lyssa.”

“Such as?”

Reida rolled her eyes. “Such as I passed the Trig test. Got an A in fact. And I’m your ride home,” she added with a smirk.

“You wouldn’t.”

“Try me, homewrecker.”

“Hey, Seth, what do you say? Reida or Lyssa?”

“Huh?” said Sethan, finally looking up from his notebook.

“Reida or Lyssa,” Kairn repeated, as Sethan looked at him blankly. “Which one would you want to go out with?” Reida jangled her keys over Kairn’s tray. Kairn snatched them in his fist and scowled at her. “The ride’s not a factor.”

Sethan blinked at him a few times before glancing over at Lyssa and scrunching up his face. “Neither?” He ducked his head and resumed his frantic scribbling.

“Neither?” said Kairn. He cast Lyssa another look. How someone could look at those legs and not wish the already miniscule skirt was just another inch shorter, he couldn’t fathom.

Reida sniffed. “Well, he didn’t pick Lyssa.” She jabbed a fry into her ketchup almost violently and stuffed it into her mouth.

“He didn’t pick you either. What are you working on?” He tried to peek around Sethan’s rapidly moving hand.

“Trig.” Sethan curled an arm defensively around the notebook.

“I’d think you of all people did alright on the test.”

“I did. This is today’s homework.”

“Oh,” said Kairn, poking and frowning at his fries. “Yeah. I should do that too.”

Reida leaned out around Kairn’s back to peer at Sethan’s work. “That doesn’t look like Trig.”

“What are you looking at?” Sethan snapped at her, and Kairn couldn’t help but try to catch another look at the paper. Sethan glared at him and pulled it to his chest. “Get your nose out of my homework.”

Kairn exchanged a puzzled look with Reida as she settled back into her seat, and returning to her fries, she shrugged at him.

“So who does float your boat?” she asked Sethan.

Sethan frowned for a moment, as if he’d forgotten what they were talking about; then he glanced at Lyssa again. “I don’t know.”

“Kairn’s sister would do you.”

“Reida!” Kairn dropped the fry that was halfway to his mouth back onto his tray.

“What? She would.”

“She’s fourteen.”

“I’m not doing anything with your sister. Ever.” He suddenly turned to Reida with a look like she’d sprouted another head and clutched his notebook even tighter. “What are you looking at me like that for?”

“Huh?” said Reida.

“Stop it.”

Kairn looked from one to the other, lost. “Looking at you like what?”

“I’m not interested in your stupid sister.”

“No one said you were.” Kairn reached for his arm. Sethan jerked away from him.

“I’m going somewhere else to do my homework. Don’t follow me,” he added, as Kairn opened his mouth again.

“We weren’t-” said Kairn, but Sethan was already stalking off, notebook pressed to his chest. He turned to Reida, bewildered, only to find her the same. “What was that?”

“Dunno.”
