Suddenly dodge ball was easy and painless. Reida made sure she had a ball at the start of the round, Kairn made sure to stand right in front of her, and within a few seconds after the whistle blew, he was on his way to the bleachers.
He sat for the next ten minutes in peace, trying to ignore the chaos below, dwelling on Lyssa and the fact that he had a party to go to tomorrow instead, until Reida came trudging over, nursing a sore elbow.
“You okay?” said Kairn.
“Hmm?” She looked up, perplexed, then down at the arm still cradled in her hand and quickly dropped it. “Yeah, fine,” she said, and she settled onto the bench in front of him with a sigh.
They both watched in silence for another minute as their classmates continued to pelt each other with balls. The crowd on the floor was swiftly thinning as Kinu took out victim after victim. This seemed to please Mr. Hakaro, who was pacing the far side of the room with his whistle in his hand.
Kairn shook his head. The whole thing was so ridiculous. What was it he’d been thinking about before? Right, his bit of luck last period and the party-
“Hey, Reida.” he leaned down over her shoulder.
Reida turned and cocked a brow at him.
“I just wanted to say thanks.”
“What?” Reida shrugged. “You bought this favor. That little rotting bundle is yours until Tuesday.”
“And it’s a great deal if you ask me, but that’s not what I meant. I’m talking about Biology.”
“Huh?” She leaned back, propping her elbows on the bench between them. She made a face at the one that had been hit but left it there anyway, her shoulder up against Kairn’s shin.
“When you went and paired up with Rune. Lyssa was so jealous!”
“Oh.” Her voice sank, and she pulled her arms back in a bit.
“You know,” Kairn went on, oblivious, “she even invited me to a party tomorrow night. I mean, I think she’s kinda inviting everybody, but you know, I’m not usually part of everybody, and she actually asked me to my face to come. You know, maybe you could come too.”
“Yeah,” Reida said dryly, turning back to face the game. “That sounds great.”
Just then Kinu took out his last opponent and the whistle blew.
“You’re going to knock me out right away again, right?” said Kairn, as everyone rose from the bleachers with much grumbling and groaning.
Reida’s lips curled into a grin. “It’ll be my pleasure.”
