Strawberry Banana #9. Breakfast in Bed with Chopped Nuts

Timeframe : Saturday morning
Word Count : 709
Rating : PG

I will come back to the sleepover, but this is already done so I thought I'd put it up.

Kairn was seated on the bed, legs folded in front of him and one of Sethan’s notebooks in hand, squinting at the mess of math and doodles that apparently passed for notes in Sethan’s world. Sethan was parked near the door, in the chair from Kairn’s desk, with a big, flat board propped against his knees.

“Your notes never make sense.” Kairn smacked the notebook against the pillows. “There’s nothing here.”

Sethan peered over the top of his drawing board and arched a brow. “That’s because I don’t really need to take notes. Besides, they’re safer in my head.”

Ignoring him, Kairn resumed flipping pages back and forth. “You’ve got like three equations here and the rest is all doodles. Why do you even bother?”

Sethan shrugged, his pencil still rapidly scratching its way across the board. “I’ve gotta at least look busy.”

“You should try actually taking notes. Then I could borrow them and they’d make sense. Hey, is that one me?” He bent the pages back and held the book up for Sethan to see, a rough sketch of his own face scrawled in ballpoint pen across the center of the page.

Sethan’s drawing board dipped and he craned his neck over the edge. “Yeah,” he said. “You know, you’re supposed to be sitting still.”

“You said I could read your notes, and I could finish breakfast.” He tossed the notebook back on the bed and brandished a piece of toast. “Obviously you don’t need me to stay that still.”

Both boys looked up as Kairn’s mom came in with a basket of laundry on her hip. “Well,” she said, heaving the basket up onto Kairn’s dresser. “I was going to ask if you boys need anything, but it looks like you’ve already got every lamp in the house.” She frowned at the bare bulb of Kairn’s desk lamp. “Make sure you put the shades back on those when you’re do- Oh, Sethan, that is precious!”

“Precious?” said Kairn as Mom gaped at Sethan’s drawing board. “I do get to see this before you turn it in, right?”

“Relax,” said Sethan. “It’s just you glaring at my notes.”

“Oh, but it’s so you.”

“Great,” Kairn rolled his eyes. “You’ve captured my essence: baffled by trig. Or lack thereof,” he added, with another shove to the notebook.

“Oh hon, you’re sweet even when you are busy being baffled. You know, I might have to commission another of these from you, dear.”

“Um, sure,” said Sethan, with a sideways look at the hand that settled on his shoulder. “He needs to learn to sit still though.”

Kairn scowled at him. “If I’m going to sit here through two pictures I’m going to need more toast. And better notes.” He flipped another page and choked on his toast. “Wait, is this Lyssa? You were drawing Lyssa?”

Sethan shrugged. “She was sitting in front of me.”

Kairn shook his head at the paper. Even in scratchy ballpoint pen and surrounded by jumbled numbers and angles she was beautiful. “Now I might have to commission something.”

“Right,” said Sethan. “You’re going to get her to pose for me? Is that before or after you get up the guts to ask her out?”

“Who is this Lyssa?” said Mom, and Kairn groaned. She plucked the notebook out of his hands before he could protest and gave the sketch a thoughtful look. “Oh, she is pretty.”

“Mom!” Kairn snatched the notebook back, blushing from ear to ear.

Sethan rolled his eyes.

Mom shot Kairn a smile and ruffled his hair. “You talk about girls in front of your mother, you’re asking for trouble, hon,” she said.

“Isn’t there a living room full of Shasa’s friends you could be pestering instead?”

“The girls were all long gone before you were even up, sleepy head.”

“You’d know that if you’d bothered to get your own toast,” Sethan added.
“Well, I’ll get this round,” said Mom, “so Seth can make me a picture.” She scooped up the empty plate and turned for the door. “And maybe you want to crack a book. Lovely as they are, sketches aren’t going to help you with your math.”

Kairn groaned.

Sethan just smirked at him as he continued his drawing.
