Master Work: Sparksong
Challenges/Toppings: Vanilla #11 (a walk in the woods), Chocolate #9 (resentment)
Rating: G
Title: Daughter
Summary: Bloody inconveniences.
Notes: Sorry it’s been a while, but I ran out of steam and something else captured my writing attention. I don’t really like this one, but I’m tired of fiddling with it.

Meivu was organizing her potions when the sound of footsteps on wood reached her ears. She looked up just as Zahra poked her curly-haired head through the doorframe.

“Hey, Mei. What’s going on?” she said as she moved further into the room, glancing around at the disarray: the entire contents of the wardrobe thrown haphazardly on the bed, two waterskins and seven shoes scattered on the floor (the eighth shoe was nowhere to be found), and Meivu herself, leaning over the table, stuffing potions into a knapsack. Her hair was free-flowing down her back; this was unusual for her.

“Oh, the wood spirits are fighting with the water spirits again. Something about where the forest ends and the river begins, I don’t know.” Meivu put the last potion into the bag and turned to start rifling through the piles of clothing. She drew out a skirt and matching top, eyed them critically, then tossed both to the floor with a sigh.

“And the water spirits want you to come home?” Zahra guessed.

“Yes. ‘It is your duty as a river-daughter to defend your lands and your kin,’ they said. I wouldn’t care if it weren’t so inconvenient.” She had taken on a drawling, imperious voice as she imitated her fellows.

“You’re still going, though?”

Meivu straightened and pinned her with a look. “Of course. I am nothing if not a child of the water. It’s just there was no warning, and now I’ll have to mess with my hair. Or they’ll- well, you know. They wouldn’t understand how humans are.”

"Trust me, I barely understand myself, most times. Need me to fetch Briar to take out the dye?”

“Please and thank you.” She gestured to her hair. The brown dye was fading in places, leaving patches of taupe among the russet.
