It wasn’t communication that he missed, not anymore.
Not understanding, not even misunderstanding. Even thinking he was understood was better than knowing he wasn’t.
But that didn’t matter nearly as much now.
He’d never sing again.
It took so long to get up the courage to talk to her, and by then his voice was gone: he fell down a ridge one hunting trip and woke up hours later to find he couldn’t make a single word. Even grunting was difficult.
She could outsing a skylark.
But he’d never sing with her.
