There are rumors that Arvel's King Ophlar is a spirit, on a personal campaign to destroy the human race. There isn't much basis there (at least the genocidal part) because everybody knows wood spirits only take those who both enter and threaten their land. As long as humans stay out of the ancient forest, and keep their young out too, they should have nothing to fear.
But every year children disappear, and Ophlar refuses angry villagers their revenge. What proof is there, he says, that th1e spirits are even involved?
What would come of attempted 'revenge', anyway? They outnumber humans./
