Farran raised a brow at Ski’s entrance. “Well, that is interesting attire for a picnic,” she said, looking her up and down. “Are you and Terrel planning on sparring after lunch?”

Ski regarded her padded training gear with a shrug. “I cancelled.”

Tess didn’t even look up from the game she and Ilya had spread across the dining table. “I thought you cancelled last time.”

“I have more important things to attend to.”

Ilya shook her head. “Terrel will begin to think you are not interested.”

“Maybe I am not,” said Ski and all three turned to stare at her. “What? He spends the time we are together trying to paw me when he thinks I am looking and the servants when he thinks I am not. At least my absence will make it easier for him to determine where to put his hands. Perhaps it is time I looked to other options.”
Of course Rune picked precisely that moment to poke his head through the back door. “Ski, are you coming?” he called, leaning on the frame, a wooden sword hanging from one hand.

“Yes, in a moment,” she answered as evenly as she could as the others continued to stare. When Rune had retreated, still oblivious, she returned the dark look. “What?” she snapped.

The three hastily returned to their game.

“Does he know that he’s winning?” said Farran, nose in the air as she lifted her piece from the board.

“Pardon?”

Ilya looked to her again, though this time with concern, pursing her lips as she struggled with what to say. “Ski,” she said, sweetly. “He is not an option.”

“What?” Ski blinked. “Rune?” She looked to the door, now closed and silent. She was teaching the man to defend himself - which was proving a most difficult and frustrating task, when one thought about it - not courting him. “I never said he was.”

“Mmm-hmm,” said Farran slowly, placing her piece back on the board.

Ilya sighed, and Tess just shook her head.

“I will be out back if anyone needs me,” Ski said, stiffly. “Working. And if it will make the lot of you feel better I will see Terrel next week.”

She swept through the door without waiting for further response.
