“Put him back!” The palms against Kairn’s ears did little to abate the hoarse cries of the withered husk of a man. He pressed them more firmly to his head, just the same.
“Not that easy,” said Sethan.
“Forget easy,” said Reida, “it’s not possible.”
“Then make it stop!” Kairn pleaded.
Reida prodded the body with her foot. Arms folded, Sethan scowled as the thing writhed and wailed. Kairn reached, with trembling hands, found a board amidst the clutter, swung hard. The head rolled, the voice ceased, and Kairn turned and retched.
Not even Master Ephram deserved such a state.
