There's something between a dreadlock and a rat's nest stuck to the back of Melody's head. Christine can't stop staring.

"What?" Melody demands, not even looking up from her magazine. Christine jumps. "Why do you keep looking at me?"

"It's um...your hair." Christine twirls one her own curls, perfect, Auburn Brown from a bottle. "You should really let me brush it out. You've got this big tangle..."

Melody laughs. "Fine, okay. Get a hair brush then. I'll be right here."

"You're so pretty, Mel." Christine says, walking past, "You should really take better care of your hair. What kind of shampoo do you use?"

"Um...Jake's."

"You use Jake's shampoo?" Christine tries not to look horrified. She duck into the bathroom, comes out with a hair brush.

"Can you get me a soda while you're up?" Melody asks.

"How about a glass of milk instead? We've got skim."

Melody glares at her. Christine figures it isn't worth arguing so she stomps into the kitchen and grabs a Coke from the ice box.

"Thank you," Melody says sweetly.

Christine circles around the couch to get a good look on the knot in Mel's hair. She lifts the brush, then hesitates.

"What?"

"It looks really bad." Christine touches the snag carefully. "I'm not sure if I can fix it without hurting you..."

"So cut it. I think there're some scissors on the roll-top desk."

Christine puts her hands on her hips. "You can't be serious."

"Well, you said you can't fix it."

"You just need to put some conditioner in it!" Christine flails. "Use some spray-on detangler or something!"

"Yeah, and I'm not going to do that." Melody tips her head so she's glaring up at Christine. "So either cut it for me, or let me be."

"MELODY!" Christine shrieks, "I'm not just going to hack off your hair! What will Jake think?"

"Jake won't even notice. And if he does, and he doesn't like it...well, too bad. I've got a piece of paper that says he has to stick around until I die."

"But your hair is so gorgeous! And long! Come on, I'll run out to the drug-store and get you some detangler."

Melody laughs. "I really don't want you wasting your babysitting money on me, Christine. Here..." She puts down her soda and slowly gets up from the couch. Strolling over to the desk, she pulls a pair of silver scissors out of the cup, lifts up a handful of her hair and snip!.

"There," she says, waving it about for Christine, whose jaw has dropped. "Now, do you mind cutting the rest for me. You might as well, now."

Christine holds out her hand for the scissors. "You're crazy. Totally crazy."

Melody's smirk turns suddenly to a look of surprise, and the chunk of hair falls from her fingers to the carpet below.

Christine's by her side in a second.

"Melody? Are you okay?"

Melody grabs Christine's wrist and presses the girl's hand to her belly. "It's kicking! Can you feel that?"

"Oh...wow," Christine says, softly.

"Isn't that the coolest thing in the world?" Melody grins and Christine thinks, okay, despite her lopsided self-haircut, she's still gorgeous.

LOL sorry that the end is kind of dumb. I'm just sneaking in before deadline with my Flavor of the Day. Clearly, I like the pressure of starting it right before midnight ;)
