"Hey, Sethan," Kairn attempted casually, even as he poked his head cautiously around the door to the lab. "I don't suppose..."
His words trailed off at the sight of the empty room, and he gave the unlocked door a suspicious frown. Warning bells rang somewhere in the back of his mind. If not for the fresh bite of pain the small movement of his facial muscles had prompted from the triple lined scrape along his cheek he might have done the sensible thing of closing the door and walking away.
Kairn wavered on the threshold as his other injuries competed for attention in their attempts to remind him of their presence. He glanced around the lab, and back down the corridor, and once again at the unlocked door, and bit his lip thoughtfully. Pain lanced through it to remind him that something had already bitten it first. With a sigh of resignation, Kairn stepped into the lab and closed the door.
He crossed to the table carefully, looking around him all the time and fully expecting some trap to spring itself at him at any moment. It was almost a surprise when he made it to the long table without incident. He found the bowl of pink goo by it's smell before he saw it, an acrid stench that made his stomach flip in revulsion at the thought of what he was actually about to do. The sight of it made his stomach give another little flip, and he grimaced before he remembered not to.
The goo tingled around his fingers as he tentatively dipped them into the bowl, a nausea inducing squelching sound accompanying his efforts to scoop some out. Kairn took and deep breath and held it before drawing the stuff up towards his face, before pausing and applying it to one of the gashes on his free arm instead. He gasped as it bubbled over the wound with a life of its own.
The process, however unpalatable, seemed to lend itself to good results. Kairn relaxed slightly as the ragged edges of his tingling skin beneath the goo drew themselves together until all that remained was an angry red line. Warmth spread out from the repaired skin. With slightly more confidence, he set to work on the remaining areas of clawed and bitten skin, reaching through the shredded remains of his pants and festive jumper to get to those hidden beneath.
"That would be a lot easier if you just took them off."
Kairn startled at the voice from behind him. Goo splattered from his fingers as he spun around, and the table wobbled precariously as he staggered back into it. Reida leaned casually against the door, a familiar, but blessedly still sack in her grasp and a saccharine smile upon her face.
"N-no thanks," he stammered out, trying to ignore the ominous rattling and splooshing sound that was coming from behind him. Warmth flooded beyond the rapidly healing skin on his cheek to overtake his whole face. "What did you put in that sack anyway?"
"Oh, just a little surprise," she told him sweetly. "Head of stoat, tail of lizard..."
"And extra teeth, and extra claws," he winced as turned to get some more of the goo, only to find the bowl on it's side... and empty. "Presents are supposed to be enjoyable," he added as he peered under the table at where to goo was now oozing along the floor, apparently making an escape attempt through the gaps in the floorboards.
"Oh, I plan to enjoy it," she assured him. "You'll enjoy it too... Probably... Maybe."
"Yeah, right," Kairn muttered.
He tried to scoop up the escaping goo, but the warmth that had spread down his arms and into his hands were making it hard to collect the substance up. He stopped and looked back at her as her last words finally filtered into his brain.
"What...?"
Reida was no longer standing by the door, but walking towards him very slowly. A thoughtful expression had replaced the grin.
"We need to get those clothes off for a start..."
"What...!?"
He had just enough presence of mind left to wonder what compound she'd used on him, and whether she'd put it on the demon's claws or in the goo, before a heat haze overtook his vision and his brain lost it's grip on the conscious world.
