“Ski, were you bad?”

“Was I what?” Ski spun to face her sister’s wide-eyed stare. A very serious expression had settled on the girl’s face.

“What did you do?” Lyssa asked. She clung to the doorframe as if afraid to set foot in the room.

“What are you talking about?”

Her lip quivered. “They’re sending you away,” she said. “Whatever it was, if you just say you’re sorry. When I broke Mother’s vase, I said I was sorry, and she wasn’t as mad anymore. Ski, please.”

“Lyssa!” she said, as tears welled in the younger girl’s eyes. “I did not break anything.” She put an arm around her, pulling her from the doorway. “No one is mad.”

Lyssa eyed the open knapsack on her sister’s bed with apprehension. “Then why…?”

“School,” Ski said, giving the girl’s copper tresses a playful toss. “I am going to school.”

A glimmer of hope lit in her dark eyes. “Can I go too?”

She smoothed the hair back into place. “When you are older,” she said.

“But, Ski,” she said, her tearful tone quickly resuming. “I want to go with you.”

Ski raised a brow. “Are you sure?” she said. “There will be no time for playing at school.”

Lyssa scrunched her nose at that. “Why would you want to go somewhere that you can’t play?”

Ski laughed. “You will understand someday.”

“I hope not.”

“Come help me pack?” She steered her into the room and Lyssa hopped onto the bed. The mattess heaved and bounced beneath her, tossing about the contents of Ski’s pack. Lyssa’s frown deepened as she eyed the assortment of books laid among the clothes.

“Still want to go?” Ski said.

“Maybe someday.”
